Going on a Holiday?

Remember these tips:Calgary Home Safety The keys to protecting your home when you are on vacation are not just the ones you use in your deadbolt lock.

  • Double-check your insurance policy to find out if and when you require someone to check in on your home.  Most insurance policies stipulate that a home must be inspected once every 48 hours; otherwise your insurance may not cover you if your home or belongings are damaged through crime or flood, fire, etc.
  • Ensure that your household items are marked for identification with your drivers’ license number.  Use of an engraving pen is best, as well as keeping accurate records at home.  The use of pictures also helps to document expensive items, in addition to your list of make, model and serial numbers.  Do not use an electric engraver on electronic equipment.
  • Give a trusted neighbour a key and trip details – including contact information in case of emergency.  They are an ideal person to check in on your home.  Have them collect any junk mail or deliveries that come to your door.
  • Ask your trusted neighbours not to inform inquiring strangers that you are not at home.  Notify them of who will be looking after your home.  Ask them to call the police if they see any suspicious activity around your home while you are away.
  • Cancel home deliveries for the length of your trip (newspapers).
  • Put away Barbeques
  • Create a lived-in appearance.  Be sure the lawn is cared for while you are away, and any newspapers or flyers are collected from your door or yard.  Set lights and a radio/television on timers so that your home is not dark during evening hours.
  • Ensure that your door and window locking devices are working and are used when you leave.
  • Disable your garage door while you are gone.  Most have a switch that can be turned off.  You can also put a padlock or similar device through the door tracks to ensure it cannot be opened.
  • Put away, or secure all lawn furniture or tools (i.e. ladders) so they can’t be used to assist a burglar in gaining access to the upper story windows of your home.
  • Encourage a trusted neighbour to park their car in your driveway while you are gone.
  • Turn down the ringer on your telephone, as an unanswered phone usually means there is no one home.
